Deciding between wifi and ethernet connections

When opting for a self-service model, you will need to choose between a wifi and an ethernet connection.

This information only applies to self-service units with additional software.

Wifi connection

Wifi is the simplest way to connect your Unica Roma unit to an internet connection. The disadvantage of this is that if your wifi goes down, your units will no longer function correctly and inputing of new data/information/reporting on wines can be affected.

Key points:

  • simple to implement with a stable connection
  • riskier if your wifi goes down
  • no ethernet cable pathways need to be added in the design phase or during install of machines

Ethernet connection

An ethernet connection is often more stable than a wifi connection, but it does require more infrastructure, which can be difficult to implement in retrospect.

With an ethernet connection, you will have a physical cord between your Unica Roma unit, a modem, and then another connection from your modem to your supplied laptop at your POS station.

Key points:

  • often more secure in regional areas
  • requires physical ethernet cables that may get in the way if not built into original fit-out
  • laptop and POS placement is limited to specific areas that can be linked via router
